As President of the Sandersville Lions Club, I would like to welcome you to the Sandersville Lions Club website. Since the organizational meeting of November 28, 1928 and receiving the charter on January 4, 1929, the Sandersville Lions Club has done much in the way of supporting Sandersville, Washington County and Lions around the world.
The following is a partial listing of projects through the years:
1928-1930
Sponsored movements to secure a new post office and a hard surfaced road.
Urged construction of a new post office.
Staged a Dairy Contest at the recently beautified Court House Square.
Erected Air Markers.
Inaugurated movement of landing field for airplanes.
Secured two hard surfaced roads.
1935-1936
Staged a President Roosevelt Birthday Ball.
Provided farmers and vicinity with a Market building in town.
Organized a Civic Softball League.
Provided a small boy with optical treatment.
Aided the Family Welfare Association, Red Cross, YWCA, YMCA, and Chatham Tuberculosis Association with financial drives.
Furnished 41 blind adults with White Canes after a survey to determine the number of sightless persons living in the near Savannah area.
Assisted in passing a school bond issue.
Donated to the Will Rogers Memorial Fund.
Assisted with annual Poppy Day Sale and the city Armistice Day Celebration. Participated in a group service club meeting.
Aided a Woman's Club in raising funds for a children's nursery at the hospital and for establishing a childrens playground.
Sponsored a Hog Club and a Farmers' organization for the marketing of livestock and farm produce.
Contributed to charitable organizations.
Sponsored a basketball game and gave the proceeds to the President's Birthday Ball fund, augmenting the donation with funds secured through public solicitation.
Entertained the boys' and girls' basketball teams of the high school.
Presented ten pigs to the 4-H Club of Washington County.
Entertained a Lions Zone Meeting.
1942-1943
Sponsored Health Contest among members of County 4-H Clubs.
Sent children to Camp.
Hired airplane and distributed circulars over county soliciting aluminum and had a a collection bin built on the square.
Sponsored county N.Y.A. school for girls.
Held party for teachers.
Bought material that N.Y.A. girls made into dresses and gave them to the P.T.A. for distribution to school children.
Held Farmers' Night.
Sponsored Street Beautification project.
Held Ladies' Nights.
Sponsored movement to solicit funds to maintain F.S.A. offices in county.
Staged Blood Donors Campaign.
Sponsored school Garden where vegetables were raised and canned for lunch room. Offered prize for best crop of peanuts grown in county.
Sponsored Dances for 500 servicemen.
Sent Christmas gifts to members in service.
Observed President's 100 Per Cent Attendance Week.
Entertained ministers.
Co-sponsored Navy Day Dinner with other civic clubs (attended by 1,000 civic and military leaders of 6th Navy District.)
Host to Deputy District Governor and International Counselor E. Button at Dance. Observed Armistice Day.
Contributed toward Margaret Doty Infant Nursery.
Entertained 200 orphaned girls at a Christmas party the Lions club held.
Held club Christmas Party.
Entertained servicemen.
Held Patriotic Meeting.
Delegation attended meeting at Augusta Lions Club honoring International President E. Paine.
1950-1958
Played softball with other civic groups (proceeds went to send boys to Boy Scout Jamboree.)
Toured factory.
Supported 4-H, Boy Scout, and Girl Scout movements.
Sponsored Crusade for Freedom Drive.
Sponsored TB and Venereal disease survey raising $2,500 for these organizations. Secured paintings of two former governors and hung them in rotunda of state Capitol.
Sponsored Testimonial dinner honoring president of railroad.
Donated $500 and pledged additional $250 for high school gymnasium fund.
Conducted Broom Sale.
Constructed Boy Scout Hut and paid for light bill on a continuous basis.
Sponsored Little League Baseball team in Tournament.
Entertained teachers.
Presented medals to the 4-H club members.
Fitted one person with glasses.
Sponsored Boy Scout Troop.
Cleared $500 from Broom Sale.
Donated to Teenage Club for receptions following Home Football Games.
Entered Float in Homecoming Parade.
Donated $80 for distribution to needy persons at Christmas.
Held Christmas Party.
Donated $25 to County Home Agent.
Held Ladies Night.
Sponsored our Boy Scout troop's trip to Scout Rally at Milledgeville.
Entertained kindergarten children at Ice Cream Party.
Sponsored Explorer Scout Troop.
Sponsored Boy Scout Troop.
Participated in program at high school at which time an American Flag that flew over the Nation's Capitol was presented to the school.
Donated $30 to send boy to Boys' State.
Sponsored Little League Baseball Team at a cost of $25.
Assisted blind man in obtaining Seeing Eye Dog.
Dedicated Scout Hut and one and one-half acres of land - estimated value - $2,000.
Paid light bill for Scout hut for two months.
Held Picnic for teachers.
Assisted in Scout fund drive.
Provided Seeing Eye Dog for blind person along with transportation to and from the school that trains a blind person how to work with their personal Seeing Eye Dog companion.
Donated about $60 to needy families at Christmas.
Donated clothing and toys to needy persons at Christmas.
Sponsored Broom and Mop Sale.
Donated $25 to Lighthouse for the Blind.
Held Ladies' Night.
Sponsored boy to Boys State.
Held Family Picnic.
Provided white cane for one blind person.
Donated $50 to help sponsor 4-H Club Banquet and presented keys to outstanding 4-H girl and boy in the county.
Held Ladies Night.
Donated $25 toward expenses of three youths to Youth Assembly.
Contributed $15 toward advertising in support of hospital bond issue.
Paid light bill for Scout Hut.
Donated three cooking utensil kits to Scout Troop at a cost of $30.
Contributed $51 to Georgia Lions Lighthouse.
1964-1965
Participated in successful Blood Bank.
Sponsored circus netting $567.
Bought three pairs of eyeglasses for the needy.
Bought Heart Machine for Hospital.
Held very successful Broom Sale.
Held combined Family Picnic and installation of officers.
Held afternoon competition with other Civic Clubs in all kinds of sports activities and finished with a Picnic Dinner for members and wives.
Bought 1,000 Red Bud Trees for county beautification.
Held successful Broom and Bulb Sale.
Donated $25 to March of Dimes.
1976-1978
Sold Brooms, Mops, and Light Bulbs for Nursing Scholarship.
Sponsored Boy Scout to Scout Leadership Camp.
Made contribution to Boy Scout Troop #74.
Contributed $500 to Hospital Nursing scholarship fund.
Sponsored August Bloodmobile Drive.
Sponsored the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon.

Purchased eyeglasses for three children.
Contributed $300 to the Washington County Troubled Children's organization. Contributed $100 to the Washington County Public Library.
Donated $100 to the Washington County Family and Children's Services that was used for food for the needy.
Contributed $500 to Leader Dog for the Blind.

Purchased eyeglasses for Tony Phillips costing club $78.

Provided transportation to Macon and Augusta, Georgia, for dialysis machine treatment for three patients.

Paid part of the first year's Pledge to Emory Eye Clinic of $1,997.
Gave $100 to the Washington County Children's Christmas.
Gave $803 to Georgia Industries for the Blind.
Gave $50 for Food for the Blind Persons' Camp.
Gave $971 to Boy Scout Troop #74 to purchase tents.
Gave $50 to pay for transportation for needy patients attending dialysis treatments.
Purchased warehouse brooms from the Georgia Blind Persons Organization for $975. Purchased eyeglasses for Ms. Evan Snider.
Paid second year pledge to the Emory Eye Clinic (Woodruff Fund) Emory Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, in the amount of $2,263.
Donated $300 to Boy Scout Troop #74 for their operating budget.
Provided eyeglasses for Randy Hardness and Paulette McDowell costing the club $158.
Donated $500 to the Georgia Lighthouse Foundation.
Donated $100 to Department of Family and Children's Services.
Donated $150 to Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind.
Paid $79 for eyeglasses for Herman Tanner.
Continue to pay for Scout Hut utility charges.
Raised $670 from Warehouse Broom Sale.
Held annual Ladies Night in February - largest attendance ever - 127 members, guests and wives.
Provided $630 to redo Scout Hut.
Donated $200 to Washington County Senior Citizens.
Held Pancake Breakfast in June.

Donated $200 to Memorial Hospital Garden project.

Club collects used eyeglasses and hearing aids for the Georgia Lions Lighthouse to be distributed world wide.

Local programs supported by Sandersville Lions Club:
Each spring the Club, along with Lion Howard Sheppard, sponsors the annual fishing day for kids under18 and senior citizens over 65.
Each week a Lion or group of Lions takes a vase of flowers or reading material to a shut-in, a nursing home patient or an extended care facility patient.
Provide eye exams and glasses through local Optometrist, Dr. Perry Giles. From July 1, 2001, to June 30, 2002, the club has provided 98 pairs of eyeglasses and 18 eye exams for local underprivileged persons. Provided 2 hearing aids for the local under privileged persons.
Held diabetic screening at Relay for life.
In addition to donations, the Club gives certificates to all Broken Shackle Ranch students completing the GED at Sandersville Technical College. The top three individuals are awarded $100.00, $50.00 and $25.00 respectively.
Club gives a $500.00 scholarship in memory of Lion Sanders G. Mercer, Sr., to a senior at Brentwood School and at Washington County High School.
Sponsor of Boy Scout Troop 74. Provide scout hut and financial support.

The Sandersville Lions have not done everything. We have, however, stood shoulder to shoulder with men and women who sought the betterment of the community.
