The primary funding base of Lions Clubs International Foundation is the Melvin Jones Fellowship, the highest honor conferred by the foundation and which recognizes an individual's commitment to humanitarian service. Currently, there are more than 195,402 Melvin Jones Fellows worldwide; 131 Lions clubs have attained a 100% Melvin Jones Fellow membership.

Howard Sheppard

A successful businessman, Lion Howard Sheppard has been a member of the Sandersville Lions Club for 55 years. He is a Melvin Jones Fellow and was honored by District 18-F in 2002 with a progressive membership. He was Lion of the Year in 1978 and 1998. He has served as President of the Club in 1952-53. He served as a Zone Chairman (year unknown). He has served on various committees including the Mop and Broom, Program, Special Projects, Valentine Party and Extension.
Each year, Lion Howard Sheppard (along with his family, the Sandersville Lions Club and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources) holds a fishing day for kids and seniors at one of his ponds. He was the individual who suggested forming the Sandersville Lions Foundation, Inc. The purpose of the Foundation is to give Melvin Jones awards to deserving individuals of the Sandersville Lions Club. He is the chairman of the Visitation Committee for the Sandersville Lions Club. Each week a club member visits someone who is in the hospital, local nursing home or at home. A book or a vase of flowers is carried to the individual.
He readily offers his business facility to District 18-F for Cabinet meetings, training and other Lions functions.

Gary Cullens

Lion Gary Cullens joined the Thomasville Lions Club in District 18C in November 1972. He transferred to the Sandersville Lions Club in August 1998.
During his membership in the District 18-C Thomasville Lions Club, he was elected Lion of the year in 1976-77; 1978-79; 1979-80; 1981-82; 1984-85: President Thomasville Lions Club 1974-75; 2nd VP Thomasville Lions Club 1973-74; Secretary Thomasville Lions Club 1976-77; 1978-98; Zone Chairman District 18-C 1975-76; Region Chairman District 18-C 1976-77; 18-C District Governor 1977-78; Cabinet Advisor 1978-79; Council Advisor 1979-80. He was a Melvin Jones Progressive. District 18C Awards include Membership Master Key, District Lion of the Year 1980-81; District Secretary of the Year 1977-77; Extension Awards (3), Guiding Lion 1976-77; International President Commendation 1977-78; 100% District Governor 1977-78; 100% Vice District Governor, 100% Zone Chairman 1975-76; 100% President 74-75.
After transferring to the Sandersville Lions Club, he was a member of various committees including the Greeter Committee, Mop and Broom Committee and Extension Committee.
After being elected as Mayor of the City of Tennille in January, 2002, Lion Gary Cullens was accidentally killed while doing work for his church in May of 2002.

Jack Maffett

Lion C.W. "Jack" Maffett
Lion Jack has been a member of the Sandersville Lions Club since February 1, 1996. Served as Club President 2000-2001; served as Region Chairperson 2003-2004 and 2006-2007; served as Zone Chairperson 2001-2002 and 2002-2003. He served as Chair of the Whirte Cane Committee, Broom and Mop Committee, Club Program Committee. He has served on the Special Projects Committee. Lion Jack was the 1999 Sandersville Lion of the Year and became a Melvin Jones Fellow in 2003. He has received an International President Certificate of Appreciation. He attended the Southeastern Lions Leadership Institute in 2003. He designed the Club Pin and the 75th Anniversary Pin. Lion Jack is always willing to go the extra mile to lend a helping hand.
